Hopi Yellowware Seed Jar by Nampeyo, c.1900
This seed jar by Nampeyo dates to the turn of the century. The classic seed jar, an excellent example of Nampeyo's yellow slip, shows Nampeyo continuing to develop and experiment with her now-famous eagle tail design. The eagle tail design comes from ancient Sikyatki pottery, and is one of the most enduring examples of Nampeyo's Sikyatki Revival. This version of the eagle tail design seems to show influence from Zuni, with the talons or beaks on either side of the design transformed into Rainbird-like swirls. A red pentagon (versus the traditional square) frames the mouth of the jar. The jar measures 3 1/2" height and 7 3/4" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair.
