Hopi Polychrome Bowl with Double Bird Design by Nellie Nampeyo updated
This masterpiece-level example of Hopi polychrome pottery is signed by the artist, Nellie Nampeyo. Nellie Douma Nampeyo (1896-1978) was the middle daughter of Nampeyo (1856-1942), between her eldest sister, Annie, and her youngest sister, Fannie. The design on the exterior of this bowl is abstract and incorporates familiar Hopi avian motifs. The inside of the bowl is decorated with a double bird design. The double bird design is thought to show influence from Europe, as it resembles both the Habsburg flag (rulers of Spain, including parts of the Southwest, for two centuries) and the German double-headed eagle. The bowl measures 4 1/4" height and 9" diameter, and is in excellent original condition without repair. The bowl matches a bowl by Nellie's sister, Fannie: elmoreindianart.com/Detailed/4958.html
