Hopi Polychrome Bowl with Double Bird Design by Fannie Nampeyo

This exceptional example of Hopi polychrome pottery is signed by the artist, Fannie Nampeyo. Fannie Nampeyo (1900-1987) was the youngest daughter of Nampeyo and the most prolific potter of her five children. This bowl has two designs—a traditional Nampeyo family migration design that perfectly fits the bowl's exterior, an an interior double bird design. The double bird design is thought to show influence from Europe, as it resembles both the Habsburg flag (rulers of Spain, including parts of the Southwest, for two centuries) and the German double-headed eagle. The bowl measures 3 3/4" height and 9 3/4" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair. This bowl also matches a double bird bowl with a similarly decorated exterior by Fannie's sister, Nellie Nampeyo: elmoreindianart.com/Detailed/4959.html
