San Ildefonso Pottery

San Ildefonso pueblo is located north of Santa Fe along the Rio Grande near Bandelier National Monument. The potters at San Ildefonso are best known for their incredible black on black pottery style that was innovated by Maria & Julian Martinez in the 1920TMs. In addition to the black on black style there are many different traditional types made such as, black on cream, polychrome, undecorated polished black ware, red ware, matte red on red, and black on red to name a few. In recent years the gallery presented a wonderful collection of San Ildefonso polychrome ollas that Steve had collected over the past two decades. There is a great article on the resources page for more information on this particular type of San Ildefonso pottery.
