San Ildefonso Polychrome Olla, c.1890 new
A striking example of classic San Ildefonso pottery, this large polychrome jar is well-balanced, featuring a detailed fine-line design and a strand of leaves around the rim. This jar includes all the characteristic elements indicating it was made before the turn of the century. It's surface exhibits the old-style stone polish which predated the later rag polish at San Ildefonso. Together with a secondary red band around the base, this piece clearly dates from around 1890 or before. It was hand coiled from native San Ildefonso clay and pit fired traditionally. With wonderful craquelure and shine in its surface, this piece has a great presence. It measures 10 3/4" high by 12" in diameter. It is in excellent original condition without repair or restoration. A wonderful example of traditional Pueblo artwork. A highly recommended addition to any collection.
