Hopi Polacca Seed Jar with Kachina Faces by Nampeyo, c.1890s

This Hopi Polacca seed jar dates to 1890-1895 and is the distinctive work of Nampeyo (1856-1942). The drawing on this jar matches the drawing on the many tiles with similar kachina faces produced by Nampeyo, which currently reside in many museum and private collections. The form of this jar also matches similar seed jars attributed to Nampeyo. Four kachina faces dance around the mouth of the jar—interestingly, though they each have similar traits, one is drawn with arms and greater detail. The jar measures 4 1/2" height and 7 1/2" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair.
