Hopi-Tewa Polacca Jar with Butterflies by Nampeyo, c.1888

This early example of Nampeyo's Sikyatki Revival dates to 1888. The jar's form is more experimental, with a raised rim, and both the jar's form and design are an earlier attempt at a slightly later and more refined example, P3494. The red bottom, red rim, and warm white slip are all characteristic of Nampeyo's earlier Polacca pieces. The jar is well-molded, with four symmetrical panels that each depict the same abstract butterfly design seen later on P3494. This piece shows Nampeyo perfecting and thickening her slip, as the slip shows less craquelure than earlier Polacca pieces. The jar measures 5" height and 8" diameter, and is in excellent, original condition.
