Santa Clara Carved Redware Avanyu Jar by Tammy Garcia, c.1990 new
This is a superb example of the early work of Santa Clara master potter Tammy Garcia (1969- ), who is known for her incredible bronze and glass work in addition to traditional pottery. Garcia comes from a long line of master potters from Santa Clara Pueblo—she is the great-granddaughter of Christina Naranjo, and the great-great-granddaughter of Sara Fina Tafoya.
This jar is signed with her maiden name and reads "Tammy Borts Santa Clara 90," indicating it was made in 1990. The charming jar has a precisely carved avanyu wrapping around its body, and the red clay is expertly polished. The jar measures 3 7/8" height and 4" diameter, and is in excellent condition.
