Hopi Polychrome Sherd Jar by Rachel Sahmie updated

This rare polychrome seed jar by Rachel Sahmie features a rare all-over sherd design. The “sherds” reference both traditional Hopi designs and designs from the ancient world, with kachinas and avian themes. Rachel fired the jar in August of 2019, and it has been in Steve Elmore’s personal collection since. The jar measures 5” height and 8” diameter, and is in excellent, original condition.

Rachel Sahmie is a fifth generation Hopi potter, who learned pottery-making from her mother, Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, and her grandmother, Rachel Namingha Nampeyo. The pottery-making has been passed down from their grandmother Nampeyo (1856-1942) for six generations.
