Large Hopi Seed Jar by Rachel Sahmie
This impressive seed jar by Hopi master potter Rachel Sahmie was fired in August 2021. The jar has a large presence, measuring 7 ¼” height and 14” diameter. The jar is decorated with original abstractions of mudhead faces coming off of a Hopi dance rattle in the center. This jar is traditionally molded, painted, and fired, as is all of Rachel’s pottery, and is signed with Rachel’s Hopi name “Nampeyo Koo Loo.”
Rachel Sahmie is a fifth generation Hopi potter, who learned pottery-making directly from her mother, Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, and her grandmother, Rachel Namingha Nampeyo. The pottery-making has been passed down this way in their family from their grandmother Nampeyo (1856-1942) for six generations.
