Hopi-Navajo Yellowware Seed Jar by Nathan Begaye, c.1986

This is a yellowware seed jar by Nathan Begaye, signed "Nathan B. Hopi Navajo 5-23-86." The jar measures 4 3/4" height and 8 1/2" diameter, and is in excellent original condition. The jar has a Sikyatki Revival design, and is an excellent example of Nathan drawing inspiration from the ancient Hopi village of Sikyatki. While the design on top is traditionally-inspired, the bottom of the jar has an abstract expressionist design. Nathan's work is well-known for combining and transcending tradition, and standing alone as an artistic ceramic. Nathan Begaye (1958-2010) was an incredibly innovative potter, drawing inspiration from both the modern world and his Hopi and Navajo heritage.
