Zuni Polychrome Owl, c.1920

While this old Zuni owl is unsigned, it appears to be an early example of Nellie Bica’s work. Nellie Bica (1904-1998) is one of the most famous Zuni master potters of the 20th century, and is known especially for her pottery owl figures. Nellie learned to make pottery in 1917, as a teenager, from her mother’s youngest sister. She taught her daughter, Quanita Kalestewa, to make pottery, and Quanita says her mother taught her to pray while gathering clay and making pottery. Nellie is also credited with helping to keep the pottery tradition alive at Zuni. This owl measures 5” height and 4.25” diameter, and is in excellent condition. A superb addition to any collection of pueblo pottery.
