Rare Hopi Polacca Open Bowl by Nampeyo, c.1895
This early Nampeyo bowl shows her dexterity and fluidity in her evolving abstract drawing. Essentially, the "S" of the Zuni/Hopi Rainbird design has been hijacked into a total different aesthetic statement. This simplifying and reinterpreting is also the essence of Modernism. The black and red splattered background precedes Jackson Pollock by six decades. The bowl measures 8.5" diameter and 2.25" height and is in excellent original condition.
