Large San Ildefonso Blackware Jar by Rose Gonzales

This large carved blackware jar by traditional San Ildefonso potter Rose Gonzales (1900-1989) features the water serpent, the Avanyu, with clouds around the rim. Rose Gonzales was one of the first potters at San Ildefonso to produce blackware, beginning in the 1920s, and is recognized as innovating deeply carved pottery in the 1930s. The jar measures 7" height and 9 1/2" diameter, and is in excellent, original condition with "Rose" carved on the bottom. This jar has a big presence and a graceful form with a high black polish.
