Hopi Black and White on Red Bowl by Nampeyo, c.1905-1910
This Hopi redware bowl by Nampeyo dates to about 1905-1910, Nampeyo’s mature period. We have seen several variations by Nampeyo of the design on this bowl, which we refer to as animal spirits, with both bird and mammal characteristics. This spirit animal sits on top of a classic Sikyatki Revival design, with a feather swirl mirroring the tail of the animal. The white on the bowl fired well, which is impressive considering the white pigment did not always “stick” to the pots so well. The bowl measures 3” height and 9 ½” diameter, and is in excellent original condition. A fascinating example of Nampeyo’s work!
