Polacca Kachina Tile by Nampeyo, c. 1885

This is an excellent example of Nampeyo's early drawing on the tiles. This is her familiar Shalako Mana figure done around 1885. The tile features a red slipped edge and measures 3 1/2" square. It is in excellent condition Similar examples of Nampeyo's tiles with this design are included in the Peabody Museum at Harvard. Note how she shortened one side to fit the tile—she was young and still learning when she made this tile. The tile includes a custom-made stand and a letter of attribution from Steve Elmore. A classic example of Nampeyo's Shalako Mana and her early development of the tile form.
