Rare San Ildefonso Polychrome Jar with Stepped Handles, c.1910

While the creator of this unusual San Ildefonso pottery jar is uncertain, there is no doubt this is an exceptional example of Pueblo art. The compelling design features a dynamic “spaceship” complemented by stepped handles. The outstanding design has two central checkerboard panels on each side, surrounded by spinning designs. Two T-shaped checkerboard designs with clouds at the top drop down from both handles, toward the base. The jar has a rag-slipped polish, rather than an older stone polish, and measures 10 ½” height and 14” diameter. The jar is in excellent condition. This jar was previously in the collection of the famous Santa Fe art dealer and author, Forrest Fenn. Overall, this is an excellent example of Pueblo art.
