Masterpiece Hopi Seed Jar by Nampeyo, c.1895 new

This masterful seed jar represents the early mature work of the great Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo (1858-1942). Nampeyo revived the iconic discus-shaped seed jar form from pre-colonial Hopi pieces, including famous examples excavated at the Sikyatki site by the Smithsonian institution in 1895. Nampeyo’s resulting Sikyatki Revival style founded an art movement which has been practiced until present day. This jar features an early example of Nampeyo’s yellow slip and inspired designs with eye-dazzling precision. Nampeyo’s innovative synthesis of tradition and improvisation earned her a reputation as “the greatest maker of Indian pottery alive” (Chicago Tribune, 1911). This jar is impressively large, measuring 14 ¼” in diameter by 6 ½” high, and is in excellent original condition. It is traditionally made and fired from native Hopi clay. A definitive piece by a great Indigenous Modernist, this piece is highly recommended.
