Rare Hopi Jar With Bird By Nampeyo, c.1900 new
An elegant water jar by the Hopi-Tewa master potter Nampeyo (1858-1942), this piece has an iconic water jar form decorated with alternating panels featuring floral designs and distinctive Sikyatki Revival birds. The arched rainbow framing lines and bird motifs are inspired by classic pottery made at Acoma around this time, although Nampeyo’s birds are distinctive and improvisational. She is known to have made many such Acoma studies in this period. Similar examples can be found in significant museum collections. This piece measures 9” by 9” and is in excellent original condition. It has a striking, distinctive presence. A unique item for the serious collector of fine Pueblo pottery. Ex-Bonhams. Ex-Burt and Ruth Malinke Foundation. Highly recommended.
