Hopi Parrot Canteen by Vernida Polacca Nampeyo new
A wonderful piece of Hopi pottery by Vernida Polacca Nampeyo, this effigy canteen was traditionally made and pit fired out of doors at the artist's home in Polacca, Arizona. Vernida is a descendant of the great Hopi potter Nampeyo (1858-1942) who learned to make pottery directly from her grandmother Fannie Nampeyo. Based on an original pre-colonial Sikyatki example in the Field Museum, these parrot effigy canteens were also a favorite of Vernida's cousin, the Nampeyo family master potter Rachel Sahmie Nampeyo. This piece measures 7 1/2" long by 4 1/2" high. Clearly signed by the artist. An excellent addition to your collection of contemporary Pueblo pottery.
