Early Nampeyo White Ware Open Bowl with Classic Swirlnew
This old Hopi open bowl by Nampeyo dates from her transitional period around 1895. The bowl measures 9 1/4" in diameter.
The slip is transitional between her traditional crackly Polacca slip and her later yellow slip. The design shows a variation of her classic swirl design — an abstract bird hanging from a cloud, which she introduced in the late 1880s. The piece is well molded and well fired. The red rim is one indication of its age and the extra coil on the rim is indicative of Nampeyo’s hand. Excellent condition without cracks or chips. On a stand, the bowl has a big presence.
