Hopi Polychrome Open Bowl by Nampeyo, c.1905
An iconic example of the innovative painting of Hopi master potter Nampeyo (1858-1942), this piece features an intricate abstract design incorporating Sikyatki design elements into a highly original abstract composition. This piece may represent contributions of Nampeyo's daughter Annie, who was a regular collaborator in the family workshop during this period. Rivaling the prominent abstract artists of the coming decades, Nampeyo's work from this era is a significant contribution to American Modern Art. This piece is traditionally made and fired, measuring 6 1/4" in diameter. Excellent original condition. An excellent example of the work of a great Indigenous Modernist.
