Hopi Seed Jar by Garnet Pavatea, c.1950-1960
This traditional seed jar is an excellent example of mid-century Hopi pottery by Garnet Pavatea, c.1950-1960. The yellow-slipped exterior and curvilinear abstract avian designs are typical of the Sikyatki Revival style, invented by the matriarch of modern Hopi pottery Nampeyo (1858 - 1942). Pavatea learned this Sikyatki style from Nampeyo and garnered a reputation through the Museum of Arizona craft shows of the 1930s. This piece measures 4" high by 8" in diameter. It is clearly signed by the artist. An excellent example of fine Hopi pottery at a great price.
