Hopi Polychrome Bowl with Geometric Design by Nampeyo, c.1905

Nampeyo (1856-1942) made this polychrome bowl in the mature period of her career, around 1905. The fine molding and painting on the bowl are indicative of her work. The bowl has a central geometric design, encircled by two black bands that form a border between the inside of the bowl and its rim. The abstract design has great dynamic movement, which suggests a central sun with five rays that radiate outwards. The sun is framed by a border with six panels and the familiar Hopi motif of kiva steps. The bowl measures 2 3/4" height and 8 1/8" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair.
