Early Hopi Ethnographic Canteen, c.1870s
This early ethnographic Hopi canteen dates to the 1870s and shows wear from use in the villages. This canteen could possibly be the early work of Nampeyo (1856-1942), as it has her indented handles and forward-tilting spout. The canteen has great patination, as well as the excellent rounded skull shape of the early Hopi canteens. For its strap, the canteen has an old handwoven sash which could be as old as the canteen itself. The canteen measures 9 1/2" height, 11 1/2" length, and 11" diameter. The canteen is in good condition, with one half-inch chip on the mouth of the spout.
