San Ildefonso Blackware Jar by Desideria Sanchez

This nice jar by Maria Martinez’s sister, Desideria, features a feather design. Desideria Montoya Sanchez (1889-1982) was one of San Ildefonso's master potters, and often worked with her husband, Donicio, who painted some of her pottery. The jar is clearly signed in the clay on the bottom “Desideria.” The technique is to polish the entire jar with a shiny finish and then to paint in the negative grey to create the design. This jar has an appealing high polish, with minor scuffing, and measures 4 3/8" height and 5" diameter.
