San Ildefonso Blackware Jar by Desideria

This nice jar by Maria Martinez’s sister, Desideria, features the water serpent design of the Avanyu. It dates to around 1940 and is clearly signed in the clay “Desideria.” The technique is to polish the entire jar with a shiny finish and then to paint in the negative grey to create the design. This jar has an appealing black mirror surface in the design. Measures 7 inches diameter by 5 inches height.
