Tesuque Pottery

Nearest to Santa Fe of all the Pueblos is Tesuque just a few miles north of the historic plaza. Because of its close proximity to Santa Fe, traditional pottery making at Tesuque went through some very dramatic changes. At the end of the 19th century Tesuque potters like their neighbors at San Ildefonso produced some of the finest black on cream types as well as black on reds. After the arrival of the Railroads to Santa Fe Tesuque quickly adapted their techniques to garner the favor of the ever-burgeoning tourist market and produced the now famous “Rain Gods” as well as a huge variety of poster painted types in the 1920’s.
