Hopi Yellow Ware Bowl by Nampeyo, c.1910new
An iconic example of the work of Nampeyo, this polychrome yellow ware bowl features a striking abstract bird motif in the artist's signature Sikyatki Revival style. This piece dates c.1910 in Nampeyo's mature period. The design shows a top view of a bird broken up into hard-edged abstract elements. This technique shows the subject from different perspectives simultaneously. Nampeyo's style is a known precursor to cubism and other trends which would define Modernism in the following decades. This piece incorporates several of Nampeyo's hallmarks including the raindrops on its rim, the horizontal lightning frame motif and a hanging lug, demonstrating that the design is intended to be displayed vertically. It measures 7 1/4" in diameter by 2 1/2" high and is in excellent condition. A highly recommended art work by a significant Native American Modernist.
