Hopi Polychrome Open Bowl by Vernida Polacca Nampeyo

This piece is the first open bowl that Hopi master potter Vernida Polacca Nampeyo (b. 1955) has created. Vernida was inspired to make this bowl when she saw an old bowl by her grandmother, Fannie Nampeyo. Both the bowl's form and design are exemplary of classic Nampeyo family pottery.

Vernida's grandmother Fannie taught her pottery-making from a young age. For decades, Vernida has made traditional Hopi pottery the way Fannie taught her. This bowl represents both a departure from Vernida's usual work and a revival of older Nampeyo family designs.

The bowl measures 2 3/8" height and 10" diameter, and was fired November 2023.
