Huge Hopi Black on Red Seed Jar by Garnet Pavatea
This masterpiece-level black on red Hopi seed jar is signed by Garnet Pavatea (1915-1981), a prolific Hopi-Tewa potter from First Mesa who made pottery from 1940 until the end of her life. Pavatea is known best for her redware pieces like this one. Measuring 15" diameter, this large jar has a big presence and is expertly-molded and painted. The jar is decorated with the classic bear claw Nampeyo family design, which is expressed in four panels around the mouth of the jar. This is a rare and exceptional example of Garnet Pavatea's work, one of the best pieces she ever made. The jar is in original condition without repair.
