Hopi Polychrome Seed Jar by Rachel Sahmie
This polychrome seed jar exemplifies Rachel Sahmie’s continuation of the Sikyatki Revival art movement. The Sikyatki Revival was created by Nampeyo, Rachel’s great-great-grandmother, in the 1890s, when she began borrowing designs and forms from Sikyatki pottery examples she had seen. This jar’s design combines avian and cloud themes with four directional whirling logs. This design is based on an old seed jar by Nampeyo in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The jar measures 3” height and 6 ½” diameter, and is in excellent, original condition.
