Polacca Effigy Jar by Nampeyo, c.1885

This is a Polacca effigy jar made by Nampeyo around 1885. It has a beautiful dance sash design painted on its sides, and a masked face protrudes at the front. The slip fired with a nice tonality, with colors ranging from cream to orange. The jar measures 4" height and 5 1/2" diameter, and is in original condition. Nampeyo (1856-1942) was the matriarch of Hopi pottery, and this jar is a unique example of her early work.
