Open Bowl w/ Spiral Bird Design by Vernida Polacca, 2026 new
This bowl, made by traditional Hopi potter and descendant of Nampeyo, Vernida Polacca, is well formed with a nice yellow slip, traditional Sikyatki designs and an abstract spiral bird on the interior. The contrast between negative and positive space keeps the eye intrigued and wandering the designs throughout the piece. The eagle tail patterns, spiral talons, and abstract designs are found all throughout Sikyatki revival art work and indicate a long lineage and appreciation of birds and nature. Vernida's grandmother Fannie taught her pottery-making from a young age. For decades, Vernida has made traditional Hopi pottery the way Fannie taught her. This bowl represents both a departure from Vernida's usual work and a revival of older Nampeyo family designs.
