Small Hopi Seed Jar by Mark Tahbo (1958-2017)

This miniature yellowware jar features three butterflies and fine-line avian motifs painted in red and black. The piece has a nice blush and a fire clouded surface, indicating traditional pit firing.

Mark Tahbo (Hopi-Tewa) was an influential First Mesa potter active from 1978, taught by his great-grandmother, Grace Chapella. A key figure in sustaining traditional Hopi firing practices in the early 1990s, he produced finely balanced works with exceptional symmetry and thin walls, painted in native slips and natural pigments. His work is in many museums and collections.
