Hopi Bowl With Swirl Variant by Nampeyo, c.1900 new

This open bowl dates from Nampeyo’s early mature period around 1900. This piece features an early example of her perfected yellow slip, developed to mimic the ancient yellow ware of pre-colonial Hopi pottery. The resulting Sikyatki Revival style created an enduring Indigenous aesthetic which founded an art movement still practiced today. The intricate abstract spiral motif in this bowl is a highly original variation on one of Nampeyo’s most recognizable designs which she introduced in the late 1880s. This piece is well molded and well fired, measuring 9 ¾” in diameter. The hanging lug and raindrop dotting on the rim are indicative of Nampeyo’s hand. Excellent condition without cracks or chips. On a stand, the bowl has a big presence.
