Ahote Kachina Doll, c.1950 new

This traditional Hopi kachina doll depicts the Ahote Kachina, a figure who customarily appears in the Powamu ceremony. He is easily recognizable with his black face, horns, pop eyes and prominent snout. He has white star and moon glyphs on his cheeks, a Douglas Fir ruff around the neck, a dance kilt, a sash and a fox pelt on the back of the belt. This doll is traditionally carved from cottonwood root with excellent attention to detail in the miniature regalia. This piece was carved in the 1950s and stands 8 3/4" high. Recently available from an Arizona collection. An outstanding addition to any collection of Hopi kachina dolls.
