Hopi Tuwalakum Guard Kachina, c.1940 new

This rare katsina features a black and red painted face with pop eyes and fierce teeth. Dressed in a kilt, wedding sash, woman’s belt, and moccasins, he once carried yucca whips as protector and overseer. The cornhusk ruff around his neck hints at his name. These kachinas, last seen in ceremonies in the early 1900s, acted as guardians in Hopi rituals. This doll measures 9” high. Excellent condition. A great addition to any collection of kachinas.
