Contemporary Hopi Dough Bowl With Cococle Kachina by Nyla Sahmie, 2024 new
This large bowl is an excellent example of the work of Nyla Sahmie, a fifth generation master potter and direct matrilineal descendant of Nampeyo (1858-1942). A combination of traditional Hopi design elements, this bowl centers the face of Cococle Kachina, a bringer of gifts during the Hopi ceremonial cycle. This bowl is graceful and inviting with a warm presence. It is well potted and painted with Nyla's characteristic precision. Certainly one of the best living traditional potters, Nyla is the last potting daughter of Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo. Her work is unrivaled in the artform and becoming scarce. This piece was traditionally made by hand coiling and pit firing at the artist's home in Polacca, Arizona. It measures 11" in diameter by 5 1/4" deep. It is clearly signed by the artist. A great addition to any collector of contemporary Indigenous fine art pottery.
