Contemporary Hopi Kachina Jar by Nyla Sahmie, 2024 new
This jar is a nice piece by the traditional potter Nyla Sahmie, a fifth generation master potter and direct matrilineal descendant of Nampeyo (1858-1942). This jar adapts an abstract Kachina design, combining many Sikyatki Revival design elements into an original composition. Nyla is one of the last Nampeyo family potters to continue the Sikyatki Revival tradition with pit firing. Unlike her sisters Jean and Rachel Sahmie, Nyla's work is quite scarce. We are proud to represent it. This piece was traditionally made by hand coiling and pit firing at the artist's home in Polacca, Arizona. It measures 8" in diameter by 6" high. Clearly signed by the artist. A great addition to any collector of contemporary Indigenous fine art pottery.
