Large Hopi Seed Jar by Nyla Sahmie, 2024
This jar is a masterful example by Nyla Sahmie, a fifth generation master potter and direct matrilineal descendant of Nampeyo (1858-1942). This jar takes a graceful disc-shaped form, decorated with an innovative interpretation of the traditional migration design, one of several designs used by the Nampeyo family of potters for over 100 years. Certainly one of the best living traditional potters, Nyla's work attains a precision that is unrivaled in this artform. These large, exquisite pieces are becoming scarce. This one is of museum quality. It was traditionally made by hand coiling and pit firing at the artist's home in Polacca, Arizona. It measures 12 1/4" in diameter by 5 1/2" high. Clearly signed by the artist. A great addition to any collector of contemporary Indigenous fine art pottery.
