Large Masterpiece Jar by Rachel Sahmie, c.2022 new
A large masterpiece by the late Hopi-Tewa ceramic artist Rachel Sahmie Nampeyo (1956-2022), this jar is gracefully decorated with the iconic eagle tail design, a motif inherited from the artist's ancestor Nampeyo (1858-1952), America's first Modernist artist and the matriarch of Hopi pottery. This is a large piece with an impressive presence. It is traditionally made from native Hopi clay and fired outdoors at Rachel's home in Polacca, Arizona. This jar is the last large piece of pottery Rachel made before her passing in 2022. A significant piece of pottery and exemplary masterpiece of an important Native American artist.
