Hopi Polychrome Jar with Extended Neck by Nampeyo, c.1910 updated
Nampeyo at her best. This elegant jar is an eye-catching example of the high period of Nampeyo's work around 1910-20. An innovative master potter, Nampeyo is renowned for her prolific career as a widely-marketed traditional potter. Reviving design elements found on ancient pottery from Hopi's pre-colonial past, Nampeyo's signature yellow slip and curvilinear abstract avian glyphs became the iconic Sikyatki Revival style widely practiced by Hopi potters ever since. This jar is an exceptional example of Nampeyo's best work with abstract feather designs which compliment its graceful, high-necked form. It is well potted and finely painted, measuring 9" high by 7" in diameter. Traditionally made from native Hopi clay and pit fired. An excellent example by a significant Native American artist.
