Hopi Black on Red Bowl by Nampeyo, c.1905 updated
This class example of Nampeyo's Sikyatki Revival dates to 1905. Nampeyo began using the red slip in the mature period of her career, and chronologically, it represents the last of the four slips that she mastered. The striking, original abstract bird design clearly references the designs from the ancient Hopi village of Sikyatki, in both theme and its placement in the bowl. The Hopi version of a heart-line or spirit-line intersects the body of the bird. The bowl measures 8 1/2" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair or restoration.
