Hopi Black on Red Canteen by Nampeyo, c.1910

Nampeyo (1856-1942) made this superb black on red canteen in the mature period of her career, around 1910. The canteen has two unusual handles with two small holes for hanging, that more closely resembles the lugs at the top of Hopi open bowls than canteen handles. The design has a classic sky band at the top, with eagle tail feathers dropping down on both sides. At the center of the design is a bird or kachina face, surrounded by hatching that suggests corn. The canteen measures 7" height, 6 1/2" width, and 4 1/4" diameter, and is in excellent condition with no repair.
