Santa Clara Blackware Bowl with Carved Avanyu by Joe Chavarria, c.1990
This classic blackware bowl by Santa Clara potter Joe Chavarria has a carved avanyu design across the body. Joe learned pottery-making from his mother, Vickie Martinez Tafoya, and his precise carving and polishing shows her influence. Vickie learned from her grandmother, Flora Naranjo, and later studied with Stella Chavarria and Teresita Naranjo. The bowl is etched on the bottom “Joe Chavarria Santa Clara Pueblo,” in the same style that his mom signs her pottery. The bowl is in excellent condition and measures 3 ½” height and 5 ¼” diameter. Complimentary shipping is included.
