Santa Clara Carved Redware Jar by Teresita Naranjo, c.1960

This carved redware jar is an excellent example of the early work of Santa Clara master potter Teresita Naranjo (1919 - 1999). This piece features an iconic Avanyu or Water Serpent design carved deep into the stone polished surface of the clay. It is handmade from Santa Clara clay and pit fired in the traditionally. Teresita's work shows mastery in traditional techniques and the unique touch of a contemporary artist. This piece measures 6" high by 10 1/2" in diameter and is in excellent original condition. It is signed on the bottom by the artist: "Teresita Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo." An excellent addition to any collection of contemporary Pueblo pottery.
