Description
This unique bowl by master potter Lena Charlie shows an exceptional abstract bird exemplifying the sophistication of Hopi design. This redware piece is painted in fine-line, natural black pigments, creating a composition with negative space.
Lena Chio Charlie (c. 1888/1908–1978), known as “Corn Woman,” was a prolific Hopi-Tewa potter from Hano on First Mesa, celebrated for her meticulous and vibrant pottery active from 1933 to 1961. A close relative and collaborator of Nampeyo of Hano, she maintained a strong family artistic legacy while using a signature corn-ear hallmark and covering her vessels with intricate bird and geometric motifs. Neil David, the Hopi artist and Kachina carver is her grandson.
This piece measures 3” in height by 9 ¾” in diameter and is in excellent original condition.
