Fannie Nampeyo

Fannie Nampeyo (1900–1987) was an exceptional Hopi-Tewa potter and cultural matriarch who played a vital role in preserving her family’s artistic legacy. Born on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona, she was the youngest daughter of Nampeyo of Hano, the famous master artist who revived ancestral Sikyatki polychrome ceramics. Fannie began making pottery in her early twenties, quickly becoming her mother’s essential artistic partner. As her mother’s eyesight failed, Fannie painted the intricate designs onto the vessels her mother hand-coiled. Because her mother could not write, Fannie signed these collaborative pieces as “Nampeyo” and later signed her own work as “Fannie Nampeyo.”

While she mastered her mother’s fluid geometric styles, Fannie developed her own distinct reputation for her precise execution of the iconic “migration” or “bird wing” motif. She worked strictly with traditional hand-coiled local clays, natural mineral paints, and outdoor firing techniques. Beyond her art, Fannie inherited the sacred role of matriarch for the Hopi-Tewa Corn Clan. She passed these traditional techniques down to her own children, ensuring the continuity of the Nampeyo pottery tradition across generations. Today, her award-winning ceramics are preserved in major institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
