Blackware Melon Jar by Helen Shupla updated
An iconic masterpiece by Helen Shupla (1918-1985) of Santa Clara Pueblo, this jar's undulating "melon" form and high-shine stone polish are excellent examples of the artist's mature style for which she achieved a well-deserved reputation as a master-potter. Bridging the divide between contemporary and traditional, this piece achieves a sleek modern aesthetic and is handmade and pit fired outdoors. It measures 11" in diameter and is in excellent condition. Clearly signed by the artist with provenance from the collection of Tony Falco. A great addition to any collection of work by the Pueblo matriarchs. This piece radiates perfection in form and surface. It has a large presence.
